Hi Emily!

I have been taking Vicodin daily since 2003 and my pain medication intake is monitored monthly by my pain specialist. I do some physical therapy type exercises to help strengthen my quads, but I can't do any kind of cardio for the lower body.

I haven't taken any of those Glucosamine and Chondroitin pills because studies have shown it really doesn't help and I don't want to waste money. :)

Thanks for the encouragement and I hope you feel better too!

I'm also 21.. but haven't been diagnosed with anything. I do believe, however, that I do have arthritis and weak joints. It could be from my previous job as a housekeeper which lasted only a few months because my body couldn't take the bending anymore. But now I work in a factory and if your job at the time is screwing caps and tops onto bottles.. then.. that is a real pain, too. (also packaging.. lifting all those bottles for hours on end)..

I was just wondering how you deal with your pain.. medication? if so, what kinds? And do you perform specific exercises to help build strength in your joints?

I was thinking of trying this pill called Flexcerin.. and I also saw something on TV called ...oh the name escapes me right now.. but it has Glucosamine and Chondroitin that help your joints.

Just wanted to say something to let you know you're not alone.. it sucks that we have to go through this already.

"I find it quite easy to talk about myself and I’ve told my knee story countless times. As such, I struggle with leaving it out. Why do I feel compelled to tell people about it? Certainly, it’s important to share it with my close friends and my small group because it is such a big part of my life. But it is totally not necessary to mention it to people I have just met."

I disagree somewhat with this. As someone who struggles with the TMI monster, I think, as you mention earlier, it is a part of you, and who you are.

What strikes me as similar (though in no way am I equalizing the two) is trying to explain to someone about a mental disorder. Let's say, for example, I'm talking to someone with ADHD. They may get the top-level understanding, but when I explain that it is an incredible struggle to have a conversation with someone with a TV on in the background; that it is bordering to a torture test, even though the person could be having an incredible conversation and the TV behind them is showing an irrelevant program that I wouldn't stop on if I were flipping channels at home; that makes it clear.

I don't open the conversation with it, obviously, but there's no shame in the idea that if the topic comes up, you don't want to at least address the difficulty in it.

I think this is a good verse to think on. But, it is important to understand who the verse was written too (a thirty to fourty year old man). Also the point of the verse is that your example will cause people not to despise your youth. It is not a verse to throw at people that think you are too young or inexperienced for something, rather the verse is something for the young person to live up too.

Dear Christy~
My name is Jillian, and I'm a junior in high school in Hermantown, MN. I was just surfing the internet trying to find out more information about teens and young adults going through chronic pain when I found this blog site off of a Google search.
Since my freshman year of high school, I've been dealing with many different chronic pain issues. I had trouble sitting during class and school was basically becomming a huge struggle for me. After I had many extensive tests done, I found out that I had a bone tumor inside my sacrum which is at the bottom of my spine. Ever since, I've struggled to find an answer to my terrible ongoing pain. I've been to every hospital in Duluth, MN and have even been down the the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to find answers. Unfortunately, I was left with nothing.
I was forced to quit my sports when I found out I had the benign tumor. Being that I played basketball, soccer, and ran track...this put a bump in the road.
I have attended a Lutheran church my entire life and have had a very active faith life. But for the past two years, I've been left with a lot of questions. I couldn't believe that God had let me down like this, and I had begun to lose faith. This loss of faith has found me now getting help for anxiety and depression which has spiraled out of control due to this chronic pain.
I find comfort in knowing that their are other people going through similar situations to me that have been able to regain their strength through their church life. I am slowly but surely working towards that again.
I just wanted to give you props on writing your "Facing Chronic Pain as a Young Adult" book...I've been looking for something like that for a LONG time to help me out. I would also like to thank you on putting together a blog like this. I enjoy reading the things people share about their chronic pain.
I hope things become easier for you as soon as possible... thanks again!!

Sincerely,
Jillian
